On Friday I shared my thoughts from Chapter One: "Perpetual Adolescence: The Current Culture of North American Evangelicalism" and today I offer reflections on Chapter Two: "The Promise and Peril of the "Para-church".
Stackhouse does an admirable job of painting the Para-church landscape, giving the reader an overview of the start and growth of Para-church organizations. As I read the historical overview, I was taken back by the influence these organizations have had on me and the church I pastor.
For the most part, the influence has been helpful - these organizations have come along side and helped us to do what we could have not otherwise done.
However, there have been cases where these organizations have worked at odds with us, and drained our resources. They became a hindrance, not a help.
Question:
- Can you name the organizations that have been helpful?
- Can you name the organizations that have hindered your church or denomination effectiveness?
Go.
