EVANGELICAL LANDSCAPES - PART III

FACING CRITICAL ISSUES OF THE DAY

Again, let's look at another collection of essays from the pen of this Canadian scholar and writer. Essay #4 looks at the evangelical understanding and use of the Bible.
"The B-I-B-L-E
Yes, that's the book for me.
I stand alone on the Word of God.
The B-I-B-L-E"
"All Christians love and venerate the Bible, but no tradition of Christianity loves and venerates it more than Evangelical Protestantism. The renowned English Pastor and Writer John R. W. Stott, one of the current generation's leading evangelical statesman, pronounces evangelicals to be, above all, "Bible People."

"Lutheran sociologist, Peter Berger, famously writes of protestants purging Roman Catholicism of most of it's myth and mystery, leaving the bible at the core of humanities revelational connection with God. Evangelicals "Stand Alone on the Word of God" as faithfully as any Protestant- even to what many Protestants, including Lutherans, would deem an extreme. Precisely because of this setting aside of other religious resources in favor of the Bible, the identity, activity and vitality of evangelicals have depended crucially on the Bible in their midst."

In my next post, we will look at the question, "Who Are The Evangelicals"
