EXCITING NEWS!

I have decided to ask a few of my friends to share posts from time to time on this blog. Today, I am pleased to introduce you to my good friend Steve, our very first guest writer.

Steve Merki is the son of a Nazarene pastor and grew up in Pennsylvania, Alaska, New Jersey and Ohio. He went to Olivet Nazarene University where he met his wife, Diane (Crisp). He graduated from ONU and Nazarene Theological Seminary. He and Diane began their ministry in Sunnyvale, California where they spent ten years. They then moved to Waldorf, Maryland where they pastored for 22 years. Steve and Diane have four grown children.

In 2011, Steve was diagnosed with ALS and he retired in 2014. He and Diane continue to live in Southern Maryland where they enjoy a strong connection with their church and community.

Here are a few things we wanted you to know about Steve:
  • Steve was born in Bethlehem because there was no hospital at the time in Nazareth where his parents lived (oh yeah - Pennsylvania, that is).
  • Steve is so old that, when he and his family moved to Alaska when he was a child, it wasn't even a state yet.
  • Steve was at the first Monday Night Football game between the Browns and the Jets in 1970 and still has his ticket stub.
  • Steve has been married to (beautiful) Diane for 36 years.
  • Steve loves baseball, jazz and history.
You won't want to miss Steve's first post tomorrow, a fascinating review of a book he just read. Regular readers of this blog know that I give books a rating after my review. Well, I've already seen Steve's post, and I give it a 5 out of 5!

Sneak peek:

"That story has me thinking of the conflict that surrounds us as Christians today. It's so easy to get caught up in the battles. But when we choose instead to reach into our communities with compassion, the walls of resistance to the story of Jesus begin to come down."
